Home Defense

Home Defense. It means something different to everyone. For some, it means a state of the art system with alarms, window sensors, ground sensors, motion detecting alarms and lights, estate protection K9’s, cameras and perhaps even private security. But for many, we don’t have the financial resources to spend to mitigate what we know is probably a small risk. We do what we can to protect our home and our loved ones within the means available to us. For many, purchasing a handgun is something within their financial means to provide peace of mind and a tool to protect ourselves, those we love and all that we have worked so hard for.

Since the sunset of the Assault Weapons ban in 2004,  AR-15s have never been more popular. Hunting rifles and shotguns have become more and more sophisticated and accurate, utilizing materials in construction never before seen in the industry. But the clear trend in the United States is handguns. More and more handguns are being purchased with an eye toward having that gun be used for personal defense and home defense. Concealed carry permit applications have skyrocketed as well. So, what should someone do if they consider their handgun as their primary home defense tool? Obviously, train as often as you can. But, also, you need to be aware of the laws that govern home defense and self defense law in the state you reside. Be aware of what type of handgun you can possess in that state. For instance, magazine capacity, registration requirements and regulations regarding firearm storage.

With a handgun as your primary Home Defense weapon, it is important to know and understand what risks are involved so you can mitigate those risks. Safe storage that provides ready access to you is an important consideration. You can get a system that is so protective that you can’t get to it in time if you really needed. Training and practice are important to mitigate the risk involved with having a weapon in your home. Learning and practicing safe weapons handling, reloads, basic marksmanship and tactics of moving your family to a pre-arranged safe room within the house are all critical steps to take. So, take this serious and get yourself trained by qualified professionals. Include your family in your training and have everyone in the home know what they are supposed to do and where they are supposed to go.
