Tyler On Training- What distance should I practice at?
Tyler Grey answers the question “What distance should I train at?” Most self defense engagements take place at very close distances. This is based on the fact that you are more of a threat to someone at closer distances than farther away. If someone is going to rob you, carjack you, or worse, they will most likely need to be close to you to do so. So, remember that generally, the distance is not going to be dictated by you, but by the assailant. Therefore, because the assailant will most likely be at a close distance, then you should train at close distances, say 5-10 yards.

Most people feel that they need to train at greater distances because shooting at closer distances feels “easy”. So they push themselves back to 15 to 25 yards and practice on slower actions, trigger control and sights. Again, that’s not how it really happens, it happens very fast, you have threats in close proximity to non threats, so you need to do is train at close ranges, but complicate what happens at those close distances.
