Concealed Carry 101- Part 2: Safety, Storage & More

In this second video in the concealed carry 101 series, Mike talks about safety, storage, and more. First off, remember that safety is always the highest priority with firearms. And the more you train, the safer you become with firearms. If you have to take a class to get your permit, this is a permit class, and shouldn’t be thought of as a training class. Once you get your permit, you will need to continue training, both on your own, and with qualified instructors, with experience, so that you will become safer, more proficient, and keep up to date with any changes in the law that might affect you.

Also, think about your core reason for getting a permit.  Do you plan to carry daily, or are you thinking more along the lines of home defense.  These are two separate things, and by determining what you main concern is, will help you in terms of firearms selection, ammunition selection and training that can help in those specific areas.

How you are going to secure your firearm is another thing to think about, both in holster selection, and in storage.  There are lots of holsters out there and in an upcoming video, we are going to be talking about what to look for in a holster, and some of the better ones to secure your firearm if you are attacked or involved in a physical confrontation.

Home storage should be considered, especially if you have children, or frequently have people in your home, including friends and family, and also workers, such as housekeeping.   Vehicle storage is another thing to think about.  You’re probably going to notice more and more places that prohibit firearms, and you’re going need good storage in your vehicle if you have to leave your firearm behind while shopping or at restaurants.  Your decision to cary may affect where you shop and eat once you start carrying.

Lastly, think about your situational awareness and listen to your instinct.  We have talked about this in previous videos, but one thing you can start with is just knowing your location at all times.  While you are driving or sitting at a stop light, think about where you are, your direction of travel and where you are going.  If you ever need to call for help, you need to know where you are to get that help.  Also, think about what you would do if you were approached by someone suspicious or armed when you get to wherever you are going.  And remember that these scenarios don’t always have to end with you engaging someone with your weapon.  If there is a threat or possible threat, and you can escape, evade and regroup, then that is often your best option.  This is why we have talked before about keeping a good distance between you and cars in front at a stop light, and knowing your surroundings.

Next week we are going to be talking with Brad Carroll, the general manager for Wilshire gun range here in Oklahoma City.  Wilshire is a great range with lots to offer besides quality lanes and firearms.  We are going to be talking about firearms selection.  So if you haven’t signed up for our newsletter, you can do so on our site, or by following the link below.  This way you will be notified of upcoming videos, articles and updates for concealed carry.  Thank you for your time and stay safe!
