Self Defense Peer Support: Part II
Just like police officers who are involved in on duty shootings, civilians who are forced to defend themselves with deadly force may experience similar feelings and emotions. Family members may also be affected. It is important to have not only live peer support, but peer support from those with experience, who have been in shootings themselves. Some of the recommendations are not to talk to people about your shooting, not to post anything on social media in reference to your shooting, and don’t watch the news or other media stories on your shooting. Keep in contact with your attorney if you have one, and don’t be afraid to seek professional counseling.
In this second video on peer support, John Risenhoover, CCW Safe’s Critical Response Coordinator, talks about some of the post incident recommendations following a self defense shooting. “Peer Support is real” says John Risenhoover, “and to have someone with experience there for you, is critical if you’re the one that has been involved in a self defense shooting”. CCW Safe provides a Critical Response Team to respond to our members who have been involved in self defense shootings. The response team, including the Critical Response Coordinator and the National Trial Counsel, assists members and their families after a shooting. CCW Safe also provides members with attorneys, investigators, experts, and any cost associated with a criminal or civil trial, as well as administrative actions against their permit.
